has selected Moog Aircraft to supply the complete fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control system for its second-generation E-Jet family, turning its back on Parker Aerospace, supplier of the FBW system for the current-generation /190 family.
Parker was not invited to bid for the Gen 2 E-Jet fly-by-wire , says a source familiar with the selection. This follows a one-year delay to Embraer’s Legacy 450/500 business jet program related to issues with software in the Parker-developed FBW system.
As with the Legacy 450/500, the Gen 2 E-jet will have full three-axis fly-by-wire primary flight controls rather than the simpler FBW system used in the current 170/190. Moog will supply the flight-control computers, control electronics and hydraulic actuators for the primary surfaces and spoilers.
will supply the horizontal stabilizer control system. Leibherr will supply the electronic controls, mechanical actuators and other systems for the flaps and slats.
Moog supplies the primary flight-control actuation systems for theand , both fly-by-wire aircraft, as well as the FBW lateral control system for the . The company supplies less complex FBW systems for a range of business jets, including the Gulfstream G280.
The FBW system for the Gen 2 E-Jet will be based on the same platform as the flight-control computers for the 747-8 and G280, says Paul DellaNeve, group vice-president for business development. “We are adapting that platform. There is no new development and very low risk. It’s just a matter of schedule,” he says.
The Gen 2 E-Jet family, provisionally planned to span the 78- to 122-seat range, is scheduled to enter service in 2018. The aircraft will have a new wing, Pratt & Whitney PW100G geared-turbofan engines and extended main landing gear.
