Teardown Report #41: Tablets in Action

Today, I want to share some details from a really great conversation I had with Tobias Hundhausen, SVP Production, Airberlin Technik, for O&M’s June interview. As you may know, a lot has changed with this carrier in the past year, from Etihad increasing its stake in the company to the operator instating cost-cutting measures. Hundhausen was up to the challenge and delivered some refreshing answers to our toughest questions, making for a must-read Q&A that should not be missed.

In the meantime, I can shed just a little bit of light on one of the coolest projects we discussed: putting tablets in Airberlin’s hangar at the brand-new Berlin Brandenburg airport (shown above). If you haven’t taken a look at this new building yet, you should—Schoenefeld Airport is transforming into a hub the size of 2,000 soccer fields, with a starting capacity of up to 27 million. 

Airberlin is using their new, spacious, hangar there as an opportunity to introduce tablets into its technicians’ workflow for maintenance operations. A parallel rollout of tablets will happen in Munich, also, and if successful it will brought to Duesseldorf as well. The project goes hand-in-hand with refurbishing the MRO’s ground vehicles, which will be outfitted with docking stations and keyboards for the mechanics to use as they work in different areas of the hangar. 

So, what will the technicians use the tablets for? Hundhausen says that unlimited possibilities exist, including using the devices to look at diagrams, tracking how long they have been working on a project and possibly even ordering parts from the warehouse while working at the site of the aircraft. I am excited to see how the project progresses.
