Doha: Learning from Berlin

Doha is due to finally get a new airport to meet the needs of rapidly expanding Qatar Airways.

So when will New Doha International Airport actually become operational? Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways CEO, who also will be in charge of the airport, is cautious about setting a deadline. The new airport is due to be handed over to Al Baker by year-end, with preparations then ramping up for operations.

But with memories fresh of the recent debacle at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, where authorities had to delay the opening at the last minute, Al Baker is not rushing to set an in-service data. He notes that the Doha facility will be larger than four times the size of the Berlin airport.

It would be particularly embarrassing for Al Baker to see a project deliver late, given his penchant for publicly blasting others for delays.
