SPP Canada Aircraft (SPPCA) is forming a business alliance with established maintenance, repair and overhaul companies and its subsidiary Hawker Pacific Aerospace in a move that the landing gear system supplier hopes will help build its base in the North American market and attract new programs as a Tier 1 supplier.
The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on Oct. 15, and SPPCA hopes to finalize the agreement in early 2014. Specifics of the partnership are still to be worked out, but SPPCA expects that the partnership will bring together “SPPCA’s design and manufacturing know-how andTechnik’s MRO capability” to lure new business.
“A business alliance with MRO heavyweights Lufthansa Technik and HPA strengthens our position to provide comprehensive and reliable aftermarket support to all of our customers” says SPPCA Vice President and COO Masayuki Onishi. “Additionally, as we look to the future, joint bidding on new programs will reaffirm our competitive advantage in the industry.”
SPPCA has already begun initial discussions on potential new programs concerning a systems integrator and/or supplier, but is not yet ready to detail those possibilities, says Josh Belick, customer support agent for the recently established firm.
The move comes as SPPCA moves to establish and expand its presence in the North American market. The firm was founded in 2012 outside Toronto as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Precision Products Japan (SPP Japan), which provides a range of landing gear, environmental systems, hydraulics and other products for aerospace and other industries.
SPP Japan transferred a portion of its landing gear work to the new Canada site, include components for Gulfstream IV and V aircraft, as well as. In addition, the Canadian factory is working on landing gear for the new HondaJet.
Moving into a 100,000-sq.-ft. plant formerly used by Mitsubishi, SPPCA held its grand opening in March and achieved AS9100 certification in August. The company increased its capabilities with the acquisition of nearby CFN Precision in May. CFN specializes in complex precision machined components, kits and assemblies for landing gear and aircraft structures.
