ATK has started work on a $50-million contract awarded by plc to produce aft-fan composite cases for the new -97 engine, which powers the -1000 aircraft variant. The contract has a potential value of more than $200 million, and the first ATK-fabricated Trent XWB-97 aft-fan case is slated for delivery in late 2013.
ATK has been producing aft-fan cases for Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines for the past six years. In August 2011 the Arlington, Va.-based company opened a new Aircraft Commercial Center of Excellence in Clearfield, Utah, the centerpiece of a plan to double its civil and international aerospace structures business in the coming years.
In addition to manufacturing the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine on the A350, the facility produces composite parts for the-2B engine on the -8.
ATK says it has developed and patented an automated process for manufacturing composites that reduces fabrication costs and improves consistency and quality. With the XWB-97 agreement, ATK broadens its portfolio in composite components, which includes fan containment and structural cases for commercial aircraft engines, stringers and frames for commercial aircraft fuselages and wing stiffeners, solid rocket motor casings, launch vehicle payload fairings, military aircraft wing skins for theand composite rotor tubes for nuclear power generation.
