Hawaiian Airlines is adding new capabilities to its fleet this year, as it begins reconfiguring its Airbus A330s and prepares to introduce ATR 72 freighters.

American Airlines, which stopped selling a special discount “Advantage” one-stop fare for three months earlier this year, recently brought the type back — a move that has lead to increased revenue in a “challenging” environment, President Scott Kirby said during the carrier’s first-quarter earnings call.

Etihad Airways President and CEO James Hogan has vigorously defended the Abu Dhabi-based airline’s presence in the U.S., arguing that the carrier has the right to compete against major U.S. airlines on international routes.

Four U.S. carriers have met an April 21 deadline to submit applications to serve new and existing routes to Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Singapore-based LCC Scoot has confirmed its first three destinations in India will be Amritsar, Chennai and Jaipur. The carrier had indicated it would announce its India service this month and was believed to be targeting these three cities (Aviation Daily, April 4). The Chennai and Amritsar flights are due to begin May 24, with Jaipur service starting Oct. 2. All will use Boeing 787s. Chennai is the only one of the three cities already served by other Singapore Airlines Group carriers.

Airbus is curtailing output of the A320neo until July to slow inventory buildup, as Pratt & Whitney works on a fix to eliminate the most severe issues with the PW1100G engine, industry sources said.

Operators of Boeing 787s powered by upgraded General Electric GEnx-1Bs will be required to grind out additional space in their engine fan cases to prevent contact with the fan blades in the event of ice shedding or some other contact with a foreign object.

CAE Inc., the largest provider of ab initio pilot programs for the commercial airline industry, said an imbalance in supply and demand for pilots is causing U.S. carriers to consider dedicated pilot pipelines.
