Qatar Airways To Introduce A350 On Frankfurt Route

Qatar Airways will launch Airbus A350-900 service on its Doha-Frankfurt route in January. The airline will use the aircraft first on the Flight QR67 and QR68 daily services and will also move them to the second daily Frankfurt service—QR69 and QR70—shortly afterwards. The two daily Frankfurt flights are currently flown by a mix of aircraft, including Airbus A330s as well as Boeing 777s and 787s.

Hong Kong Access Eased For Philippine Carriers

Airlines in the Philippines will be able to boost their services to Hong Kong under a new air services agreement between the two governments. The current agreement allots to Philippine carriers 15,000 seats weekly on Hong Kong-Manila routes; under the new deal, this allocation will double. There will be no restriction on flights departing cities other than Manila. Both Philippine Airlines (PAL) and low-cost carrier (LCC) Cebu Pacific have multiple daily flights to Hong Kong, mainly from Manila.

Lufthansa Faces More Severe Strike Action

Lufthansa’s pilots extended their strike planning to include long-haul services on Tuesday, forcing widespread cancellations of many Lufthansa-branded flights. The airline was forced to cancel about two-thirds of the 2,100 takeoffs scheduled for Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening. Pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit initially planned to call to strike only pilots of Embraers, Boeing 737s and Airbus A320-family aircraft, but later added the entire long-haul fleet.

Mitsubishi Rolls Out MRJ, Plans 2015 First Flight

NAGOYA, Japan—The first Mitsubishi Aircraft MRJ flight-test aircraft, unveiled Oct. 18, will undergo about six months of ground evaluations before taking to the air in the second quarter of 2015. The second flight-test aircraft is coming together much faster than the first, final assembly of which began a year ago, said a Mitsubishi Aircraft executive. Airframe-contractor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), the manufacturing contractor to developer Mitsubishi Aircraft, built a static strength-test airframe before the first flight-test unit.

DOT Fines Cathay Pacific For Fare-Advertising Violations

Cathay Pacific Airways will pay $130,000 within 30 days to the U.S. government to settle claims it failed to properly advertise some fares to U.S. customers, marking the carrier’s first-ever civil penalty to the Transportation Department (DOT).

Airframers Eye Honeywell Smart Maintenance Tools

A regional aircraft manufacturer will be the launch customer for a new family of maintenance applications and Wi-Fi-equipped hardware components which Honeywell will begin deploying next year. The project includes the installation of Data Lan Management Units (DLMU-W) in a family of regional aircraft, along with subscriptions to the first in a series of Honeywell “My-Maintainer” iPad applications. My-Maintainer will be offered by Honeywell through its Global Data Center.
