Jul 21, 2014
Hainan Airlines subsidiary Tianjin Airlines has ordered 40 Embraer regional jets, split between the current series and the forthcoming E2 update. Deliveries of 20 current-series aircraft will begin in 2015, with the first of the 20 E2s to be handed over in 2018. Aviation Week reported the order’s imminence earlier this month, though it was expected that Hainan Airlines buy the aircraft on behalf of Embraer-operating subsidiaries (Aviation DAILY, July 15).

MH17 Latest Blow To Malaysia’s Financial Outlook

Jul 21, 2014
The loss of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) is the latest in a series of potentially crippling blows to Malaysian Airline System (MAS), whose CEO acknowledged it was facing a much-needed “operational reset” even before the July 17 disaster over Ukraine. Like many state-founded and -funded airlines across the region, MAS has been suffering from the predations of low-cost carriers (LCC) AirAsia and Lion Air for years. March’s MH370 disaster has hurt the airline’s reputation and income stream, and the MH17 fallout is still to come.

Airline CEOs Confident In Near-Term Growth Prospects

Jul 21, 2014
More than 80% of airline CEOs are confident the industry will see continued revenue growth over the next year, but an equal number express concern about the pace of expansion in developing markets and potential slowdowns in mature ones, a PwC survey finds. While bullish on industry prospects, only about half of the CEOs expect global economic growth to improve over the next 12 months, while 5% expect a decline. Sensitivity over the potential ramifications of a slowdown or economic contraction is much higher, however.

Carbon Tax Repeal Will Cut Australian Airline Costs

Jul 21, 2014
Australian airlines are set to save hundreds of millions of dollars annually due to the Australian government’s repeal of a carbon emissions tax. The repeal, passed by the senate on July 17, was one of the central campaign promises of the Liberal-National Coalition leading up to the September 2012 election that it won. Australia will become one of very few countries-–if not the first-–-to axe an emissions tax.
