First U.K. A400M Flies In Spain 

The first of 22 Airbus A400M Atlas airlifters destined for the UK Royal Air Force has made its maiden flight in Spain.

The aircraft – MSN 15 – took to the air on Aug. 30, making a five-hour flight before returning to the Airbus Defense and Space facility at Seville’s San Pablo airport. Airbus says the aircraft will be “available for delivery” by the end of September.

Italian Navy Paves Way For Ship-Based BMD Capability 

ANTO, Italy — The Italian navy is working to develop the ballistic missile defense (BMD) capability of its Orizzonte-class air-defense ships and pave the way for BMD systems to be installed on a new class of ship to be launched in the early 2020s.

Expected German Army Requirement Prompts Laser-Guided Rocket Work 

Two of Europe’s missile manufacturers have launched efforts to develop a laser-guided rocket to meet an expected German army requirement for the country’s Tiger attack helicopter.

Diehl Defense has partnered with Israel’s Elbit Systems to develop the Guided Intelligent Light Armament (GILA) rocket, while MBDA Deutschland has signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkish armaments company Roketsan to collaborate on the development of a 70-mm guided rocket.

U.K. To Introduce Tranche 3 Typhoon Later This Year 

LONDON — The U.K. Royal Air Force (RAF) plans to introduce the Tranche 3 Eurofighter Typhoon into service in late 2014.

Canadian Coast Guard Orders Bell 429s 

LONDON — The Canadian government has ordered 15 Bell 429 light twin-engined helicopters for use by the country’s coast guard.

The CDN$172 million ($152 million) deal, announced on May 12, is part of a wider renewal of the country’s coast guard fleet that also includes new ships and helicopters. 

Heathrow Firms Up Third Runway Plans 

LONDON—The owners of London’s Heathrow airport have firmed up their plans to deliver a third runway by 2030.

Heathrow’s northwest runway is one of two options being considered for the airport by the U.K. Airports Commission, and one of four overall, which also includes a second runway at Gatwick, and a new-build airport in the Thames Estuary.

GKN Looks To Further Acquisitions For Growth 

LONDON—Aerostructures and engine component supplier GKN Aerospace says it wants to grow by building greater ties with Boeing’s commercial aircraft division.

The division—part of the wider GKN group—is looking for further expansion following its strategic takeover of Volvo Aero during July 2012, an acquisition which has made the company the second largest supplier of aero-engine components behind MTU and the engine OEMs themselves.
