The U.S. House of Representatives is about to begin debate on a fiscal 2017 defense spending bill that would provide $577 billion, an increase of $5.2 billion over the previous year. That includes $61.8 billion in funds to fight overseas wars. The problem is that the bigger-picture issues of taxes and entitlements still loom large. At the same time, there is enormous pressure from the Pentagon to pass the bill.
